    Preparing CySat-1: A look at Iowa State University’s first CubeSat

    In this paper, an overview of the scientific mission of CySat-1, the derived vehicle requirements, impact on system design, and the educational opportunities presented by these challenges. CySat-1, previously scheduled for launch on the SpaceX-21 and awaiting further details following the COVID-19 pandemic, is a CubeSat designed and built by students at Iowa State University. The primary mission of CySat-1 is to provide hands-on experience to undergraduate students in designing, building, and testing a space system. CySat-1 also hosts a scientific payload, a software-defined radio (SDR) radiometer, to survey soil moisture content on Earth from Low Earth Orbit. This mission further reinforces the affordability of CubeSats for future research missions. The Iowa State University CubeSat, CySat-1, was selected for NASA’s CubeSat launch initiative (CSLI) program and will be launched with a future ELaNa mission. The operation will be for three to six months after the deployment from the International Space Station. We will discuss the overall function of the payload and how we integrated the payload into the CubeSat. This discussion will include the student-initiative design and fabrication of critical components, including the payload and CubeSat structures. CySat-1 augments in-house, student designs with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, creating a real-world integration challenge. Iowa State University’s first CubeSat program spurred the installation of facilities such as a clean room with the anti-static capability to support building, testing, and integration of delicate space hardware. Through this process, students acquired experience with industrial level integration and testing procedures. Undergraduate teams working on CySat-1 lead the design and fabrication of the payload, structure, and system integration, providing experience with systems engineering, technical writing, and various cross-disciplinary applications. Over sixty undergraduate students, several graduate students, and four faculty members from multiple departments worked on the development of this CubeSat under the Make to Innovate program at Iowa State University, which engages students in various projects to augment their understanding of engineering fundamentals

    Amyoplasia congenita is a diagnostic subgroup of children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC). AMC is a relatively rare syndrome characterized by multiple joint contractures at birth. Amyoplasia congenita is the most common type of this syndrome with an occurrence rate of 1 in 10,000 live births, and mainly refers to the disorders with limb involvement. In this report, the author presents a premature baby with amyoplasia congenita, whose hips showed flexion, abduction, and external rotation contractures. The knees showed fixed extension contractures, so that his lower extremities were cylindrical with absent skin creases at birth

    The Impact of a School-Based Weight Management Program Involving Parents via mHealth for Overweight and Obese Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Disability: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    There is a scarcity of resources and studies that utilize targeted weight management interventions to engage parents via mHealth tools targeting obese children and adolescents with mild intellectual disabilities (MIDs) extended from school to a home setting. To test the feasibility and acceptability of a school-based weight program (SBWMP) involving parents via mHealth tools designed to reduce weight, enhance knowledge and adopt healthy lifestyles, and thereby achieve better psychosocial well-being among children and adolescents with MIDs. Four special schools were randomly assigned as intervention or control schools. Students from the intervention group (n = 63) were compared to those in the control group (n = 52), which comprised those with usual school planned activities and no parental involvement. Demographics were considered as covariates in a general linear model, an ordinal regression model and a binary logistic regression model analyzing the relationships between the SBWMP and the outcome variables at baseline (T0) and six months later (T1). Body weight, body mass index, and triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness were lower in the intervention group compared to the control group, although the differences were not statistically significant. There was a positive and direct impact of the SBWMP on students’ health knowledge and psychological impacts in the intervention group. The SBWMP extended to the home involving parents via mHealth tools is a feasible and acceptable program for this group with MIDs and their parents

    A rehabilitation program for lung cancer patients during postthoracotomy chemotherapy

    Objective: The objective of this pilot study was to describe the effects of a 16-week home-based rehabilitative exercise program on cancer-related fatigue (CRF), other symptoms, functional status, and quality of life (QOL) for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after thoracotomy starting within days after hospital discharge and continuing through the initiation and completion of chemotherapy. Materials and methods: Five patients with NSCLC completed the Brief Fatigue Inventory (measuring CRF severity) and the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (measuring symptom severity) before and after thoractomy, and at the end of each week of the 16-week exercise program. Additionally, the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (measuring physical and mental functional status) and the Quality of Life Index (measuring QOL) were completed before and after thoracotomy, after weeks 3, 6, 12, and 16 (the end of the exercise program). Further, the 6-minute walk test (measuring functional capacity) was administered before thoracotomy, prior to the initiation of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy, and at the end of the 16-week exercise program, after completion of chemotherapy. Results: Participants had a mean age of 63 years and a mean of five comorbid conditions; the exercise program was initiated within 4 days after hospital discharge. Participants\u27 CRF severity scores were reduced to mild levels, while the mean number of symptoms decreased from 9 postthoracotomy to 6 after the exercise program, with mean levels of severity and interference decreasing to below prethoracotomy levels. Likewise, participants\u27 functional status and QOL after completing the exercise program improved to near or above prethoracotomy levels. Conclusion: The home-based, light-intensity exercise program for NSCLC patients receiving and completing adjuvant chemotherapy postthoracotomy showed promising trends in improving CRF severity, other symptom severity, functional status, and QOL. Further testing via a two-arm randomized controlled trial is being conducted

    In vitro bacterial vaginosis biofilm community manipulation using endolysin therapy

    Bacterial vaginosis (BV) affects approximately 26% of women of childbearing age globally, presenting with 3–5 times increased risk of miscarriage and two-fold risk of pre-term birth. Antibiotics (metronidazole and clindamycin) are typically employed to treat BV; however the success rate is low due to the formation of recalcitrant polymicrobial biofilms. As a novel therapeutic, promising results have been obtained in vitro using Gardnerella endolysins, although to date their efficacy has only been demonstrated against simple biofilm models. In this study, a four-species biofilm was developed consisting of Gardnerella vaginalis, Fannyhessea vaginae, Prevotella bivia and Mobiluncus curtisii. Biofilms were grown in NYC III broth and treated using antibiotics and an anti-Gardnerella endolysin (CCB7.1) for 24 h. Biofilm composition, viability and structure were assessed using colony counts, live/dead qPCR and scanning electron microscopy. All species colonised biofilms to varying degrees, with G. vaginalis being the most abundant. Biofilm composition remained largely unchanged when challenged with escalated concentrations of conventional antibiotics. A Gardnerella-targeted endolysin candidate (CCB7.1) showed efficacy against several Gardnerella species planktonically, and significantly reduced viable G. vaginalis within polymicrobial biofilms at 1 to 4X pMIC (p < 0.05 vs. vehicle control). Collectively, this study highlights the resilience of biofilm-embedded pathogens against the currently used antibiotics and provides a polymicrobial model that allows for more effective pre-clinical screening of BV therapies.
